4 Considerations When Installing Security Bollards

Here are a few considerations when investing in security bollards.

When developing a security plan for your building or facility, you should consider security bollards in addition to perimeter protection. Security bollards can block the path of intruders by vehicle and are useful against several threats. Here are a few situations to consider when investing in security bollards.

Security Needs

First, consider why you might need security bollards. Have you in the past experienced any threats from the road? Or is there a particular area of your perimeter that can be left vulnerable to a vehicular attack? These and many other considerations could give you an idea if security bollards are the right choice.

Traffic

Apart from threats, another thing to consider is how security bollards can influence the traffic patterns around your facility. If you are close to public streets, on-site roads, or parking lots, then chances are much higher that a car could turn in the wrong direction and cross onto sidewalks and pedestrian-only areas. Security bollards will help create a clear divide between where vehicles can and can’t go.

Crime

As with any security measure, the level of crime in your area should also influence your choice. Even if you haven’t considered security bollards in the past, if you have been encountering repeated break-ins and vandalism, then security bollards might help deter intruders. Security bollards prevent vehicles from coming closer to your property, which forces intruders to access the property on foot, and the added risk is enough to deter most.

Bollard Crash Ratings

Lastly, security bollards are rated by the level of force that they can withstand. These are known as crash ratings, or K-ratings, and the US Department of State developed them as a measure of the speed at which a vehicle can hit a security bollard without it breaking. K4 security bollards withstand impacts from 30 miles per hour, K8 for 40 miles per hour, and K12 for 50 miles per hour.
