Don’t miss a single security breach with this fence inspection checklist.

A commercial chain-link fence can serve as a secure property border for all kinds of businesses and sites, from playgrounds to schools to retail centers to restaurants. No matter where a commercial chain-link fence stands, it needs to stay in great shape to continue to do great work. Property managers should use this commercial chain-link fence inspection checklist quarterly to maintain property security.

1. Fence Posts

Fence posts are foundational to any fence. With foundations reaching deep into the ground and set in concrete casts, the posts should be straight, immovable, and free from damage of any kind. If you can, check the concrete footers for major cracks and monitor minor ones.

2. Fence Panels

Commercial chain-link fence panels include the framework and the chain-link paneling. Check that the rails are straight, undented, and uniform. Ensure that each chain-link fence panel connects securely to its framework, with no sagging or loosening.

3. Fence Hardware

Chain-link fences connect together through various hardware, such as post caps, tie wires, clamps, rail ends, and more. Check these components to ensure that they are secure, in place, and free of any damage whatsoever.

4. Fence Coatings

Chain-link fences can have different coatings. Galvanized chain-link fences have a zinc coating, while colored fences may have a vinyl or polyester powder coating. Check for signs of deteriorated surfaces and rust. Treat the fencing for rust removal and reapply a protective coating.

5. Fence Gates

Fence gates should open and close without resistance and lock or latch properly. Cleaning and oiling the fence gates should prevent dirt from clogging its system and loud squeaking. Check that all components of the fence are secure, aligned, and free from surface damage.

6. Extra Features

If the commercial fence has any other features, such as privacy slats or barbed wire, check that they are in good condition with no breakages or other issues.

7. Drainage

Drainage issues can cause immense structural problems for commercial fences. If water continually pools around the base of a fence during and after heavy rainfall, then the fence’s foundation can erode over time. It is best to address drainage problems promptly when noticed. Ultimately, it will prevent property flooding and compromised security.
