Fencing Your Outdoor Playground

With warm weather right around the corner, your kids will probably spend plenty of time on their playground and keeping them safe while they play is a big priority.

Outdoor playgrounds are a great place for children to exercise and socialize with other children. When you think of essential structures for a playground, you may think of swings, slides, and jungle gyms. But the one piece of a playground that often gets overlooked is the fencing surrounding the area. A good playground fence should keep children safe inside and keeps everything else on the outside. However, not all fences serve the same purpose. Some styles will serve you best in certain projects, and the construction of a playground is no exception. At Hercules GSA, we know that safety and security are the main concerns when it comes to children. Read on for some tips on choosing the right fence for your playground.

Choosing the Right Material

Children are naturally curious, which means they can sometimes get into things that are not safe for them. You need to remember that children will be trying to climb and play on all structures, including the surrounding fence. The fencing material plays an important role in the security and safety of the fence. While chain-link fences may be a cheap and easy option, they can hurt children who try to climb them and get a hand or foot stuck inside or cut on the metal. Wooden fences as well are often full of splinters and rough to the touch. Smoother surfaces are ideal for kid-safe fencing, like vinyl, composite, aluminum, or steel picket and rail fencing. This will also prevent children from climbing up and over the fence.

Height

Speaking of climbing, your fence needs to be tall enough to ensure no one will be able to climb over it. Younger children only require a shorter fence, as they cannot climb over objects quite as well as older kids. However, older children and families on the playground will need something taller. We at Hercules GSA specialize in building non-climbable fences. A high fence will also keep wandering eyes away from the children and the playground.

Aesthetics

There is no doubt that the first concern with any fencing is security, but you also want the playground to look inviting to children. Try using bright, welcoming colors to paint your fence and match the color scheme to the other structure on the playground.
