A wrought iron fence is a great way to add a classic look and fantastic security to your yard. Choosing wrought iron for your residential fencing means you have a strong, gorgeous fence that’s about as low maintenance as fences can be. Even so, the best way to keep your fence looking its best is to keep your eyes open for corrosion and fix it when it happens. Here are some of our best tips to ensure your fence lasts a lifetime.

How Can You Take Care of your Wrought Iron Fence?

Clean it Gently

Unlike wood fences that should be regularly cleaned and power washed, a wrought iron fence needs minimal cleaning to stay pristine. When it does need to be cleaned, use a mild detergent, like dish soap and warm water, with a soft cloth or gentle brush, like a toothbrush, to gently loosen and wipe away any growth or stains on your fence. Avoid anything harsh, like window cleaners, bleach cleaners, or other types of polish, as it can leave stains or cause more corrosion over time.

Check for Cracks & Rust

Performing regular inspections on your wrought iron fence means you’ll catch early signs of cracking, chipping, and peeling before they grow into a huge problem. Noticing these things early means you’ll be able to fix it or have it repaired instead of needing to have a large panel of your fence removed and replaced. If you notice any spots of rust, you can remove them by gently using a piece of steel wool and re-cleaning it with gentle detergent and a clean cloth.

Apply Primer & Touch Up Paint

Rustproof primers and other protective sealants are a great way to keep water and air away from the iron to prevent rust; however, like other things, they should be touched up occasionally. If you notice small spots of chipping or exposed metal on your wrought iron fence, you can use a primer to cover the area and touch up the paint with an oil-based or acrylic latex paint made for outdoor metal. You can do multiple coats, and just make sure your fence has a chance to dry completely between them.
