Signs Your Fence Needs to be Repaired or Replaced

signs your fence needs to be repaired or replaced

Fencing your home is a long-term investment, and eventually, your fence will need some repair or be replaced entirely.

An old, damaged fence can be an eyesore for your otherwise beautiful yard. Fencing your home is a long-term investment, and eventually, your fence will need some repair or be replaced entirely. Depending on the fencing material, it can pose different problems as the fence ages. Here are some signs to look out for that could be an indication your fence needs to be repaired or replaced.

Damaged Boards

One of the easiest signs that your fence may need replacement is noticing broken or damaged boards. Over time, deterioration, wear and tear, and adverse weather can damage fence boards. While individual boards can be easily replaced, if there is a problem with several boards and the damage seems to be widespread, it may be beneficial to replace the fence entirely. This can be a sign that your fence is aging and structurally unsound.

Leaning Fence

If you notice your wood fence is beginning to lean to one side or sag in certain places, it is likely past its lifespan.  Sometimes, this issue can be fixed by replacing or repairing a few of the boards. However, if this issue is prevalent throughout your fence, this indicates that your wood is worn out. This may require a new fence to be installed before the problem worsens and your fence gives out entirely.

Cracks

If you have a vinyl fence, you know that it requires virtually no maintenance. However, some damage can occur, especially if your fence is subjected to the weight of heavy winter snow or hit by a vehicle, large piece of debris, or equipment. The biggest threat to vinyl is cracking. If you spot a crack in your vinyl fence, it is best to replace the damaged area.

Rust

Most metal fences are coated with special rust-resistant materials, but that does not always prevent rust spots from appearing. It is crucial to identify and repair these spots immediately to prevent the rust from getting out of hand, eating away at your fence, and eventually causing it to crumble apart. Also, pay careful attention to the joints keeping the fence together. Rusty and corroded joints can cause your fence to weaken. Extensive, overall rust throughout your metal fence is a sign that it needs to be replaced.

Bottom Line

It is important to properly maintain your fence so it can adequately protect your home. Be on the lookout for these signs of disrepair on your fence. If you notice that your fence is getting old, it may be time to repair it or install a completely new fence.
