These Privacy Fences Can Reduce Noise

Beyond privacy, what are you looking for in your privacy fence? Surely you want them to be durable. It’s important that they do not have any issues with rusting or pests. If you’re planning a fence for a commercial setting, added security value can be a welcome quality for a fence to have as well. Another aspect of privacy you might not so often think of is not just what people can see, but what they can hear. Is there such a thing as a privacy fence that can reduce noise?

Is there a privacy fence that can block sound, too?

Materials To Avoid

Before we go into some fence materials that have the ability to block sound to some extent, let’s go over a few that definitely will not.

If you want a privacy fence that can reduce noise, stay away from chain link. The reason for this is pretty obvious. While your chain link fence is an effective deterrent for people and large animals, it doesn’t do anything to stop sound waves.

From the perspective of a sound wave, your chain link fence is essentially full of holes. This remains true even with the addition of a privacy screen. By the same token, you’re going to want to avoid ornamental wrought iron—a material that has little value as a privacy fence in any case.

The Materials that Can Reduce Noise

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s go into the two fencing materials that can reduce noise: wood and vinyl.

Wood and vinyl stand as two of the most popular choices for privacy fencing. This is not only because they’re great at blocking sight, but it might also be because of their ability to block noise. The thicker the material, the more effective they will be at doing so. In the case of wood fencing, make sure that there is no significant space in between the individual boards for the best results.

When it comes to a privacy fence that can reduce noise, keep in mind that it’s best to build the fence as high as possible. No matter how sound-proof a material is, if it’s only five feet off the ground, it’s not going to do much to reduce noise as well.

You should know that there is no such thing as a privacy fence that will completely block noise. But that doesn’t mean that they can’t reduce it to a noticeable degree.
