The Do’s and Don’ts of Home Security Fencing

Discover the do’s and don’ts of security fencing!

Adding a fence to your home can offer many benefits, but adding a security fence to your home adds even more. Security fencing gives you all of the benefits of a classic fence – protection for pets and children, privacy, property line distinction, but adds the additional benefit of keeping your home safer. Security fencing is a little different from a classic fence and as such you’ll need to keep a few things in mind before you invest. As you begin to consider your options for your home security fence, make sure to keep these Do’s and Don’ts in mind.

Do Learn Local Regulations

Depending on where you live, you may find that your home is subject to a variety of regulations and rules. From homeowners association guidelines to city ordinances, there are many restrictions to homes within cities and suburbs. Often, backyard fencing can only be a height of six feet while fencing at the front of the property can only be three to four feet in height.

Don’t Let Height Issues Get The Better Of You

You may be stuck with a six feet or less height rule, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have a high-quality security fence. As long as your six-foot fence is built in a way to make it difficult to climb, a shorter option will still be effective. Consider using spiked toppers to deter would-be fence hoppers.

Do Consider The Details

As you begin to consider options for your security fence, make sure to take a hard look at things like the fastenings and fixtures. You need to be sure that your fence will hold up to not just threats, but the weather too. With strong, high-quality construction, you won’t have to worry about your new fence being worn down by the effects of daily wear and tear.

Don’t Ignore The Importance Of A Gate

One of the biggest mistakes that anyone building a security fence makes is to forget the importance of a gate. Even if you have a strong, well-crafted fence if your gate is a weak point, your entire system is flawed. You need to be sure that the gate is just as defensive and secure as the rest of the fence.
