How to Cover a Chain Link Fence

Chain link is inexpensive, durable, and easy to maintain; and with a few creative ideas, you can have it looking great too.

Adding a chain link fence around your property can be a great way to keep your perimeter secure, but it’s not always the most aesthetically pleasing. Despite this disadvantage, it offers increased value to your home and a wide range of benefits. It’s a great option if you need to keep pets and children inside your yard while keeping other animals and intruders out. Chain link is also inexpensive, durable, and easy to maintain; and with a few creative ideas, you can have it looking great too.

Adding Slats

Thanks to the open weave nature of a chain link fence the option to add plastic and vinyl slats is available. This easy to do method can be done DIY, although be warned it can take a considerable amount of time. Adding slats increases the privacy levels of your fence and can make them a little more attractive.

Adding Screens

There are several different types of commercial fence screening options on the market which can all make an excellent option for covering your fence. Rolled bamboo and reed screens are both easy to use and attach and can be quite attractive. However, it’s best to remove them over the winter season, and you may need to replace them frequently. Neither are highly durable and can begin to show signs of wear rapidly.

Flowering Plants

One colorful, yet seasonal option is to use your landscaping to your advantage. While you should never grow plants along your fence that will stay for long. Seasonal options like clematis and morning glories can both climb along your fence during the growing season, hiding it while making beautiful flowers. Come fall, the plants will die and can be removed for annual cleaning. Other options include tall flowers like sunflowers. Fast growing sunflowers will block out your fence while adding a cheery atmosphere that will draw birds and wildlife to your home.

Hedges

Last but not least, adding a hedge can help keep your chain link out of sight without interfering with its integrity. Hedges are a great option because they can add year round color and appeal to your fence while hiding it from view.
