Tips for Fencing Your Garden

Tips for Fencing Your Garden hercules GSA

A fence is a great way to keep your garden safe from pests, animals, and weather.

Whether you’re just planting a few flowers or are growing food for you and your family, you need to make sure your garden is adequately protected. A fence is a great way to keep your garden safe from pests, animals, and weather. This will allow you to easily access your plants while keeping unwanted visitors out. There are many types of fencing out there that offer their own advantages and disadvantages. Here are some tips for fencing your garden.

Choose the Right Fencing Material

Garden fences can be made using various materials, including chain link, vinyl, and wood.  Make sure the material you choose matches the style of your garden.  Also, you will need to take fence maintenance into consideration.  If you want to focus all your attention on your garden, choosing a fence material that requires less maintenance, such as vinyl, would be best.  However, if you don’t mind the extra work, wood is an excellent option that may require repair or painting over the years.

Safety and Security

Exposure to the elements and wild animals poses a real threat to your garden. Be sure to install your fence around the perimeter of your garden and build it tall enough so no animals can jump over it. If security is your main concern, wood and chain link fencing are both great options for keeping wildlife at bay. No matter which fence material you choose, you will also want to install a wire fence around the fence posts to restrict small animals from entering your garden. Small rodents such as squirrels, mice, and groundhogs can easily squeeze through the fence. Using wire will ensure your crops are protected.

Let There Be Sunlight

One of the main concerns homeowners have is how much sunlight their new fence will allow. As you know, sunlight is essential for growing and caring for plants. If you choose a wood or vinyl fence, your garden will be shielded from the sunlight. Consider selecting a vinyl fence with 2-3 inch spacing in between each plank. This gives your yard that classic “picket fence” look while allowing the sunlight to shine through.

Create a Border Around Your Property

Fencing is great for protecting your garden, but it is also valuable for establishing a boundary between your property and your neighbor’s. If you and your neighbor have a garden, building a fence is a good way to separate your plants from each other. It also serves as a barrier for children and pets.
