If you’ve had your fence for a while or the ground has settled since it was installed, you might find it looking less level than it used to.

If your fence has been in your yard for a while or the ground has settled since it was installed, you might find it looking less level than it used to. This is a common problem in residential fencing that can occur after a fence installation, but thankfully it is very easy to complete the process of leveling your fence at home. Here are some of our best tips to get the job done yourself!

Is Your Fence Level?

Before you can start leveling your fence, you need to check to see whether or not it is level in the first place. Grab a 2 x 4 piece of wood, a pencil, and a carpenter’s level. Start by placing one end of the 2 x 4 against the base of the fence post. Next, use the level to determine if the length of the board lines up accurately with the residential fencing. At any spots where you notice that things are not level, use your marking utensil to denote the spot. Next, start to walk down the line of the fence and check the other posts. After every post has been examined, check to see what irregularities there were.

How Can You Start Leveling Your Fence at Home?

If you are ready to start leveling your fence, you need to gather a shovel in addition to the carpenter’s level that you used to check the fence initially. The level is an easy way to determine how much dirt must be added or removed. As you go, you can use the shovel to easily scoop out dirt or add more. This process can be lengthy, but working together with someone else can make it go by much faster.

Why Is a Level Fence Important?

You might think that not having a level fence is merely a cosmetic issue, but that is not the case. A level fence will make sure that nobody can easily gain access to your property or leave your property. If your fence is not level, it might be easier for a pet or child to get out. Additionally, a fence that is not level can be an eyesore. If you care about curb appeal, it’s good to ensure things are level.
